got to be a fangirl today
May. 27th, 2003 11:27 pmMet Dennis Lehane today. Wheeeee! I even got to ask him a question. <g> Many thanks to
corianderstem for inviting me to the talk. Love private sessions; only about 40 people there. My only regret was that she had to rush to a meeting immediately after, and couldn't make me a latte. ; ) Anyway, the talk was great. He went on and on about himself and his career, and he's funny, self-deprecating and thoughtful. I can't wait to read "Shutter Island," now. I purchased a publisher's signed first edition there, which will probably never be worth much because I'm sure they printed a billion of them, but still.
I also brought my copy of "Mystic River," which he signed. It's a battered hardcover, but still, a first edition as well. It was v. gratifying to hear that he considers MR to be The Book, the one he wrote that he cared most about (up to this point), the one he thought would make or break his career -- because it's hands down my favorite DL novel. Granted, I haven't read anything other than "A Drink Before the War," but considering everyone loves that series and I just thought it was OK, I figure it's cool for me to say that. (Everyone raves about the series, and I wasn't very impressed w/ ADBTW; but then I read MR and was blown away.) And now I'm also excited to see the movie. Hopefully, it'll live up to expectations.
Apparently, the titles of the books in the series are named after song lyrics, but he can't place "Darkness, Take My Hand," although he swears it's a song lyric. I Googled it, and this was the closest thing I found (though I did not fact check it against publishing dates). The lyrics: Darkness, darkness, be my pillow, take my hand, and let me sleep. But it's not exact. That line sound familiar to anyone else?
