Stranger moves in, redecorates while woman's on vacation

DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia (AP) -- A woman came home from vacation to find a stranger living there, wearing her clothes, changing utilities into her name and even ripping out carpet and repainting a room she didn't like, authorities said.

Crazy Woman
Beverly Valentine, seen in an undated police photo, occupied a stranger's house as if it were her own.
Douglas County authorities say they can't explain why Beverly Valentine, 54, broke into an empty home and started acting like it was her own.

During the 21/2 weeks the owner, Beverly Mitchell, was on vacation in Greece, Valentine allegedly redecorated the ranch home, ripping up carpet and taking down the owner's pictures and replacing them with her own.

Mitchell was a complete unknown to Valentine, said Chief Sheriff's Deputy Stan Copeland. He said he had no idea how Valentine knew Mitchell was gone.

"In 28 years, I've never seen something this strange," Copeland said.

Valentine was being held in Douglas County Jail on a $25,000 bond, Copeland said. If convicted, she could face one to 20 years in prison. Copeland said Friday that he believed Valentine did not have a lawyer.

The case came to light when Mitchell, who lived alone, returned home October 4 to find the lights on and a strange car parked in the driveway. Mitchell called police, who went in and found Valentine, who at first pretended she was renting the home.

Later, Copeland said, she admitted she broke into the house with a shovel and was squatting there. She was charged with burglary.

Authorities found a gun and $23,000 worth of Mitchell's jewelry in Valentine's car.

Valentine had the electricity switched over to her name and moved in a washer and dryer and her dog.

Copeland said she was even wearing some of Mitchell's clothes.

"There's a lot of people saying, 'What?"' Copeland said.

Valentine was asked what to do with the washer and dryer she moved in, and Valentine said she didn't care, so police will leave it up to Mitchell what to do with them, Copeland said.

Christian Bale's Shocking Weight Loss
by Daniel R. Coleridge

Remember how Tobey Maguire beefed up for Spider-Man and starved himself for Seabiscuit? Actor Christian Bale is another such dedicated (some might say deranged) thespian. He slimmed down dramatically — losing 63 lbs. — for his new indie film, The Machinist (opening Friday). We're talkin' Lara Flynn Boyle skinny, kids. It ain't pretty.

Christian Bale
That's just not right, Christian.
Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a paranoid, sleep-deprived factory worker who, in fact, hasn't slept in a year because of a secret buried deep in his psyche. This, we are meant to understand, is a tortured soul, and he wanted to look the part for the sake of verisimilitude. "I lost about a third of my body weight," Bale reveals. "I didn't really see how else to do it.

"There are parts where your appearance really doesn't matter, and there are some where it's a very essential part of the character," he explains. "Trevor is in this ridiculously crazy downward spiral emotionally, physically and mentally. He read to me [in the script] as though he should look like he was on the brink of death."

Bale certainly accomplished his goal. Gone is the ruddy-cheeked Welsh boy we fell for in Little Women. He's gaunt as a ghost. And that muscle-y, ab-licious torso from American Psycho is replaced by a shockingly emaciated frame with an all-too-visible rib cage.

"I didn't set out to go as skinny as I did," Bale says. "I just found that I was more successful at it than I'd imagined!" Over the course of six months — including four months of prep time and the actual eight-week shoot — he reduced himself to 120 lbs. "I actually got to the weight specified in the script, which I never really thought was possible. A number of people suggested leaving it to CGI, but I don't have the faith in CGI to do that."

Still, why risk his health? "I liked the challenge — and the slightly self-destructive urges — involved in losing that amount of weight," admits Bale, who at least consulted a nutritionist for advice on vitamin supplements. "It ended up being a very nice place to be mentally. When you're skinny, man, you're calm. Because you can't waste any energy whatsoever. Most people probably couldn't tell I was happy because I really didn't have the energy to smile too much for them. Inside, I was more content, for a longer period of time, than I've ever been in my entire life."

No worries, Bale hasn't turned anorexic. Right after filming wrapped, he began scarfing down pizza and going carb-crazy. After all, he had to buff up Patrick Bateman-style again for Batman Begins. "American Psycho was more about keeping cut for vanity than being strong and capable," he points out. "Batman's body is essential for genuine strength." So long as you're eating again, Christian, we're happy.

I'm hard pressed to decide which is crazier.

(And I also wonder whether the apple and tuna was eaten spread out over the course of a day -- "Think I'll have a 1/4 of an apple now and maybe a tablespoon of tuna" -- or whether it was one meal, and when he ate it.)

Christian, you are 6'2". You are not supposed to weigh 120lbs. But though you are an insane thespian, I still love you best of all.

Article 1 is crazier in the "wtF are you people smoking" category; Article 2 is crazier in the "that's just not right, man" category.

Ultimately, #1 is "crazier" but #2 is so jam-packed with stupidity and misplaced dedication that I'm going to give Christian the win on this one. May he never go so far for a role that an article actually accurately compares him with Lara Flynn Boyle.

Icon love. :))

#1 is you, isn't it. You just had CNN change your name. The picture doesn't really look like you, it's true, but maybe you'd just watched the second half of Roswell S2.

Okay the first article made me laugh a little as it brought back memories of Beverly Hills Cop 2. Yet it was still quite far out there.

The second merely wigged me out. Creepy picture didn't help any either. My question is this.....If he didn't have the energy to smile, how did he act?

We're talkin' Lara Flynn Boyle skinny, kids. It ain't pretty. ROFLMAO
