Do you like fishsticks?

Today was apparently
grrm's birthday. I was kind of hoping for some kind of update ... any kind ... on ASoIaF, but it was another long football post. Why do you taunt us, GRRM, why? I mean, it's his bday, he can talk about whatever he wants. And really, it's his LJ, so he can talk about whatever he wants. But can't he throw us a bone? I don't want to be morbid but he's 62 today! And he has 3 very dense books to write!
I am about 1/3 of the way through A Clash of Kings. This one seems to be going faster than the last, dunno why. The font size is a little bigger, but it has 969 pages (vs 807).
- Really, the Hound totally has a soft spot for Sansa. What will come of this, if anything? I thought the person who left her the note to meet them at the godswood if she wanted to go home was totally going to be the Hound. I hope this other knight doesn't screw her over.
- Gotta say, not that thrilled with the new narrators. Theon Greyjoy kind of gives me the creeps, and Davos or whatever just isn't that interesting. I mean, I do find it interesting that Stannis basically has nothing, and yet by keeping on the down low he's got everyone worried about what he's up to.
- Very confused over the matter of the dagger (that was meant to kill Bran). Initially thought it was Tyrion's. Then thought it was Littlefinger's. Now I'm back to thinking it was Tyrion's, or if not his, then he knows who was responsible. However, the key thing here is the realization that it's not Littlefinger's (I don't think...), because I totally thought he lied to Catelyn about that and basically betrayed her. Of course, that doesn't mean he didn't. Still, that one scene between him and Tyrion where the dagger got brought up totally made me scratch my head.
- Speaking of Littlefinger, what is his game? Is it just self interest? Seemed like more than that, at first, because of having loved Catelyn in the past ... so either he still is fond of her, or he is seeking revenge of her. Or neither, and it's self interest. Gah!
- Arya/Gendry is so cute!! And Gendry all calling her m'lady, lol. Not knowing he's the bastard of a king. Not that that would give him anything, being low born. Or would it? Either way, they are very cute. I'm glad Arya's been revealed, at least to him.
- I can't wait for the scene where they're all in trouble and Nymeria comes to save them. Surely such a scene will take place?
- Poor Yoren. I don't get why he was obstinate about letting the king's men check them out; was it just to protect Arya/Gendry? If so, he had to have known that they wouldn't win against a group of soldiers who didn't care if they lived or died, so why not risk just showing themselves? Not like Arya hasn't been convincing as a boy to everyone but Gendry. Anyway. Didn't make sense to me to choose certain death over the risk of certain death.
- Yikes, Arya gave an axe to those scary guys to free themselves. Hope that doesn't bite her in the ass later.
- I wonder what goes through Jaime Lannister's head. Does he actually love Cersei? His kids? Is he all about the battle, or all about his family? What drives him?
- WTF is Renly thinking, seriously? If we hadn't seen what we saw in the prologue, I might consider that Stannis and Renly planned this, the two of them declaring to be kings, so that their enemies would think they were divided, and then come together at the end. But that doesn't seem likely, knowing what we know of Stannis's situation. How can Renly betray his brother and lay any claim to the throne, when he knows Stannis is the elder? Does he really mean to steal the throne or war against his own brother? I liked Renly from the few times we saw him, but now I'm not so sure.
- Not that I like Stannis much either, and especially not his horrible wife. That poor old maester...
I made mini pies today. 6 nectarine pies with a cream cheese crust, and 6 beef pies with a flaky lard crust. The recipes came from Rose Levy Beranbaum's The Pie and Pastry Bible. They were so much work and so fussy, but damn if they weren't extremely flaky and delicious crusts. But I must say, making them just for myself? Probably never gonna happen again. WAY too much work.
Last night I actually wrote some. My goal for myself is to write 1 word a day. That's an extremely low bar, one even I can meet. The hope is that I will write more than the 1 word, but if I don't, I don't have to feel like a failure and then avoid writing again for however many months.
