I'm the bread fairy
It took me years, but I've finally read Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies. I've had the book for a good long while, but for some reason just didn't get around to reading it. I don't know why -- it's a quick and interesting read. I've also started The Namesake by her, and put her latest book, Unaccustomed Earth, on my PBS wish list. IoM won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and after reviewing the list, I noticed that I actually have a lot of those books. It's made me want to start a project of reading each one.
This morning I started preparing some sourdough starter for the kalamata olive loaf (or loaves, rather) that I hope I'll be able to mix tonight. The starter is in the proofing box, so I'm hoping that it will be bubbly and yeasty by the time I get home (or at the very least, by tonight) so that it'll be ready for the final dough. My cousin's husband has asked me before if I've made olive loaves (I haven't), so I know he's interested in trying one. I figure if I'm going to be there this weekend I might as well bring some bread as well (though my cousin hasn't gotten back to me on her preference for the menu, which is annoying because I have to PREPARE). BTW Jade, how is your sourdough starter doing? The other day I had some extra starter that I didn't use, so I ended up drying it so that it can be safely shipped and/or taken with me when I go places.
My mom and aunt are arriving early next week, and my mom has requested that I make the Chinese bakery-style hot dog buns for them, as well as raisin bread. I'm like, since when did I start taking requests?! I still have a few hot dog buns frozen from the last time I made them ... how bad a daughter would I be if I just defrosted those instead of making a fresh batch? >.> Actually I'm happy to make bread for people I like; it just takes a long time (wild yeast take WAY longer to work than commercial yeast, because their numbers are so much fewer) and all this is happening in a matter of days.
Okay, I haven't talked about this so ...
Well the show is finally consistently interesting, though that might be too late to save it. It really pisses me off when I think of how the network insists on mucking with Joss's stuff, then is like, "Durrrr uhhh I wonder why it's not doing well..." and puts the show in a position to be canceled. What total morons.
They better not cancel it, even though it looks like they want Paul Ballard to stay and I still find him super annoying (and unattractive). Eliza is not very good in this role, but she's good enough to keep it going, with a strong storyline behind her. Alan Tudyk's guest appearance only served to show how much better an actor he is than Eliza ... what range. I think fondly back to when Jade and I saw him live in NY for Monty Python, no one else knew him -- he was just some guy who took over for the more famous what's his name -- but WE knew him and it was like, the best piece of luck ever.
Anyway. Dr. Saunders (aka solemn Fred) being a doll was a complete surprise to me. I mean, I guessed it from the beginning of this episode, but I had never considered it before then. Very nice. And I liked how her character took it, too. Dare I hope that this means she'll be a regular cast member next season? The thing is, I think Amy Acker could carry the show better than Eliza can. I wouldn't have said that before, based on the strength of Eliza's performance as Faith, but really that role was tailor made to her strengths; it's what she's good at. This role, not so much.
I'm a little sad to see November go; I liked her, though not when she was being the weepy doll who loved Ballard -- then, she was just annoying. I'm still most bothered by the realization of how Sierra came to be a doll -- some guy she wouldn't sleep with just basically made it happen? She was, in a sense, raped? At least the others had signed contracts, what about Sierra?
Finally just want to say that the show isn't what I imagined it would be when I first heard of the premise, it's both weaker and stronger than what I thought it'd be. Where it is NOW doesn't resemble what I had imagined in my mind at all, but that doesn't mean I don't find it compelling. The first 6-7 episodes were kind of difficult to get through (in a, where is this going, why is it so uninteresting when it should be REALLY good, way), but after that it's been looking way up.
