I'm back...

A few of you have reminded me that it's been a really long time since I made a post to LJ. And now that I see the date, and the date of my last (non-WoW) post, I can see that you were right. It's been over a month. I just got out of the groove of posting, and now there's too much and too little to say at the same time.

The most important thing that's happened since my last entry -- and the reason I just haven't been up to updating my journal although it needs to be mentioned -- is that my grandmother passed away. Some of you knew that she was sick. She appeared to be getting better for a time, but, well, she was 90 years old and is now at peace. She was my last living grandparent, and while in later years our communication grew limited, she will be missed.

Other updates:

* My mom is visiting this weekend, which means I have many, many yummy meals to look forward to.

* In preparation for my mom's arrival I have cleaned the house from tip to toe. Still stuff stacked everywhere, but at least the place is presentable.

* While my mom is here, I won't be able to raid for 8 whole days. There's a possibility that the Eye of Divinity will drop twice, and may go to someone who doesn't have a lvl 60 priest. /cry

* My taxes were more complicated this year, considering that I sold some stock in order to pay for the new house, so I filed for an extention for the first time and am considering hiring some place like H&R Block to do them. (Anyone know about how much they charge for individual tax preparation? May not be worth it if the refund isn't significant this year.)

* I have no idea how far the extension goes, as I can't find it anywhere in the documentation. (If someone knows, what is it???)

* I've somehow gotten myself into an Internet affair with a 15-year-old, and if I don't watch it I'm going to be the next Mary Kay Letourneau. Although, of course, we've never met, probably will never meet, and we're both aware of the fact that game stuff does not equal real-life stuff. Still, the more you talk to someone, the more you start to learn about the real person, and then lines get blurry. He's so much wittier and more mature (and funny -- that's really my downfall) than most others I've met. He's a sweet guy, but I don't want to go to jail for him.

* I betaed a story for Jade! It's called Chasing the Years, and it's a wonderful Snape/Lupin fic that I loved. I think it's one of the best things she's ever written ... that and a Firefly ficlet that she hasn't posted yet.

* I finished watching S1-5 of Gilmore Girls. I love that show.

* Currently I'm reading the "sequel" to Ender's Game, which recently made my list of Favorite Books.

* I'm also reading the manga The Demon Ororon, and unlike most manga, is only mystifying 10% of the time.

* There's a woman in my WoW guild that I despise so much I want to obliterate her from the face of the Earth.

* I haven't had Dairy Queen in a realllly long time, and after eating a Blizzard the other day, I felt so icky that I never want to go back.

And just because it's fun, I'm turning this into a game. Two things I said in the "other updates" list above are NOT true. Can you guess which they are??? ([livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani and [livejournal.com profile] akscully are not allowed to play ... they know too many of my dirty secrets.)

I thought he was 17????

[identity profile] akscully.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh DEAR.

Also, I want a Blizzard now. Damn you.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was already going to hell, so what's a 15-year-old boy to add to the rest of my sins? I mean, I can always claim fic research, since I write about teenagers...

[identity profile] mynuet.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Dairy Queen and the Gilmore Girls? I was going to say you couldn't possibly with the fifteen year old, but then saw Amelia's comments and got confused.

[identity profile] akscully.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You should know that with me 50% of what I say are lies.

[identity profile] mynuet.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
But is that a lie?

You should know that I'm really gullible, btw.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
While it is absolutely true that most of what Amelia utters are lies, in this one case she let slip a truth. Dairy Queen, Gilmore Girls, and the 15-year-old are all sadly true.

[identity profile] mynuet.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm. How about not knowing that you have six months from filing the extension form to submit your tax returns, since it's plastered all over the form you have to file?

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Six months! Thank you!

I am not coming off this looking very good, am I? In my own defense, I filed the extension online, and unless I am totally blind (which could very well be the case), I saw absolutely no mention of how long the extension was actually for. (I knew that it was quite awhile, so I didn't look that hard either. Still, should I really need to look very hard for that kind of information???)

[identity profile] mynuet.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if the online place didn't make that obvious, perhaps they also didn't pass on the rather important tidbit that you have to actually pay any taxes you owe now, and if you wait and you owe anything it'll start accruing late charges and interest and penalties and all that not-so-good stuff.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
WTF... how am I supposed to know if/what I owe without actually DOING my taxes??? And if I do my taxes, why the hell would I be filing for an extension?! ><

I don't understand this. I mean, it doesn't affect me (I don't think), as my rough estimate shows that I should be getting a return, but STILL. It's the principle of the thing. W. T. F.

[identity profile] mynuet.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're supposed to guess, and if you go over they'll give the difference back, and if you go under then you have to pay them, along with any penalties they assess (I think it's charged monthly in most cases, although there have been cases where it's compounded daily).

If you think about it, that's exactly what payroll deduction is all about - the IRS is getting paid 1/52 weekly of what your employer guesses you'll owe in taxes. It used to be that taxes were much lower, because everyone paid them all at once at the end of the year and so anyone raising the rate too high would've been tarred and feathered. Income tax was tried and repealed multiple times, but only stuck around after 1913. Income withholding was introduced in WWII because the government needed a really huge amount of money really fast without the public squealing about just how much money they were paying out.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
AN ADMISSION OF GUILT!!

Which is better than nothing, but I think the actual figure is closer to 100%.

[identity profile] akscully.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
That figure could be a lie, you know.

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very sorry to hear about your grandmother. I send you and your family my deepest condolences. *hugs*

And as far as the taxes are concerned, my father's quite uncomplicated taxes set him back $262 at Jackson Hewitt. I would buy a program for $30 and attempt to do them yourself.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Pud, for your wishes and for the tip. Yeah, if that's the case I'll just do what I can without professional services. :P

(Yes, that was me who commented anonymously before. Wow, I really *have* been away from LJ for awhile.)

[identity profile] leiliaxf.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
**hugs** sorry to hear about your grandmother.

FWIW, I paid $131 to get my taxes done at H&R. I don't know if they do a sliding fee according to how complex your return is or not, but that's also about what my Mom and sister paid, so it may be a flat fee. YMMV, of course

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Replying as me this time... :P

Thanks Sharon. Pretty icon!!

Hmm maybe I should research H&R a bit before I decide to do them on my own. I really suck at it.

[identity profile] corianderstem.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry about your grandmother, J. I wondered if maybe she had passed and that was part of the reason you were quiet lately.

But glad that my email poke made you post again. *g*

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, your poke was what finally made me get off my arse, so thanks. :-) See you in a couple of weeks!

[identity profile] fiannan.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome back! I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother; even when you know that they're at peace and not in pain, it's hard to know that they're gone *hugs*

As for the untruths, how about cleaning the house and reading The Demon Ororon? Clearly, I have no clue whatsover.

If one of the truths is that you're reading Speaker for the Dead, how are you finding it? Ender's Game is one of my favourite books too, but I'm of two minds about the sequels. Heh.

Also, thanks so much for talking about Hot Gimmick last year; the memory prompted me to give the manga a try when I came across it, and now I'm officially in love. I'd be Ryoki's slave anyday < 3

Again, welcome back. 'tis good to know you're alive and well!

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You guessed them both correctly! :O

I actually am reading The Demon Ororon, but the lie was that it was mostly comprehensible. The truth is that I rarely have any idea what the heck is going on most of the time. And yes, no cleaning of the house has been done.

Which means, of course, that I am reading Speaker for the Dead. :D I've only just started, but so far it's been a little difficult to get into. There hasn't really been anyone for me to latch onto yet -- which is very different from EG, because in EG I was immediately interested in Ender, as well as several other characters. Right now it feels like a completely separate universe from EG, even though Ender has been mentioned, and without anyone to "follow," I'm just kind of reading the words and not being all that interested in them, if you know what I mean. But like I said, it's only the beginning right now, so we'll have to see what happens when I've read more.

W00t, so glad you like HG! I <3 Ryoki also.

[identity profile] igoddess1030.livejournal.com 2006-04-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm...Enders Game. I <3 that book. The rest of the series is good in a completely different way. Hang in there, it gets better.

If you're looking something more along the lines of EG tho, try the Shadow series, which basically parallels EG in the first book and then follows a couple of the different characters, the main one being Bean.

Oh, and congrats on downing Rag. The group I run with has had him on "farm status" since January, and I *still* haven't gotten my NW pants. /cry

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-25 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've somehow managed to procure all the books that have to do with Ender through various trips to my favorite used bookstore, so I hope to eventually read them all. Will keep you guys updated on how it goes. :D

OMG at your Rags experience. Jade is not going to be happy to hear that, nosiree! So far we've gotten two hunter pants, one warrior, one rogue. So honestly, my experience could very well imitate yours. *sigh* To be honest, though, it's going to be awhile before we're really doing BWL in earnest, so my personal preference is just to get the whole tier 1 set rather than having mix-and-match pieces, which is starting to look more likely. You're so lucky to have full Arcanist!

Yeah, I definitely vote that cleaning the house is a big fat stinkin' lie.

I second that

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
And obviously the second lie is that the Eye of Dvinity will drop twice. In one week? Please! =P

Re: I second that

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it literally can't drop twice in one week because MC resets weekly. However, I am missing tonight, and will be gone through next Friday, so that's two Domo opportunities!! And it's actually dropped twice in a row already, so you're right, for it to drop four times in a row would really be crazy. But I'm more bummed about missing all that DKP -- and our guild's first venture into Blackwing Lair -- than I am about the possibility of not getting the Eye. I'll get it eventually.

Play Clarabella! We still need druids, so if you can lvl her to 60 soon, you're a shoo in! :P

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
ALL RIGHT I ADMIT IT, THAT WAS A COMPLETE LIE.

*weeps*

[identity profile] lissannej.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Am really sorry about your grandmother *hugs you tight*

As for the two which are lies, I have no idea. I do know I love chocolate chip Blizzards, though, and after reading about you eating one I've been craving one myself. Pity you couldn't send me one!

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2006-04-21 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks Liss. And thanks again for the cookies. I have finished the Latte ones -- they were the yum! Haha, I made you and Amelia want Blizzards. Even after I said I got sick from mine! You two are weirdos.
