My failing health.

So my blood tests from the doctor's office came back today, and everything looks okay except ... I apparently have high cholesterol. Dun dun DUUUUUNNN! It's at 144 (below 130 is supposed to be ideal), and they want to put me on some kind of medication to lower it. I'm like, um, can't I just try and lower it naturally first? I'm not really a medication-type person. I will take Aleve during that time of the month, but that's about it.

OMG I found the best thing at the used book store today. There is a "follow up" to The Notebook!! It's like FANFIC, only written by the original author. Bwahahahaha.

It's called "The Wedding."

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks comes the long-awaited follow-up to his classic tale of enduring love, The Notebook. After 30 years, Wilson Lewis, son-in-law to Noah and Allie (of The Notebook fame), is forced to admit that the romance has gone out of his marriage. Despite the shining example of his in-laws' 50-year love affair, Wilson himself is a man unable to express how he truly feels. With the distractions of his daughter's upcoming wedding he is forced to realize how close he is to losing his own wife Jane. But if Wilson is sure of anything, it's this: His love for his wife has only intensified over the years, and he wants nothing more than to make their marriage work. Now, with the memories of his in-laws' inspiring life together as his guide, Wilson pledges to find a way to make his wife fall in love with him...again.

I have also re-collected all of the books in the Flowers in the Attic series, which I haven't read since junior high. Jade and Amelia have never read them, and I'm going to expose them to the horror. Mwahahahaha.

I have now heard both the Chad Kroeger and Alex Band versions of "Why Don't You and I" and I have to say that I much prefer Alex's. I have no problem w/ Nickelback, but Chad's version just sounds totally wrong, not like a fun, peppy little love song but all dark and angsty. Which do you like?

PLEASE DON'T DIE, SAREA.

Also, totally agree about Chad's version. His voice is too rough and gravelly for that type of song.

Worst. Fanfic. Ever. Wilson and Jane? Bitch, please.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I will try to live. For your sake.

It was "Wilson" I had a problem with. How can you yell that out in bed? That's really what was wrong w/ the marriage.

Also, totally agree about Chad's version. His voice is too rough and gravelly for that type of song.

I know. Instead of "Hey, why don't you and I give this love thing a chance?" he's like, "Hey, why don't you and I tattoo each other's names on some part of our bodies and then kill ourselves?"

[identity profile] akscully.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I will eat your french fries to save you.

I know. Instead of "Hey, why don't you and I give this love thing a chance?" he's like, "Hey, why don't you and I tattoo each other's names on some part of our bodies and then kill ourselves?"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Or he's like, "Hey, I like your pants around your feet, I like the way you still say please when you're looking up at me." Which doesn't scream "Since the moment I spotted you, like walking round with little wings on my shoes, my stomach's filled with butterflies." Know what I'm saying?

Not that there's anything wrong with saying please. Being polite is always a plus.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I will eat your french fries to save you.

That's love. *weeps at no more French fries*

Which doesn't scream "Since the moment I spotted you, like walking round with little wings on my shoes, my stomach's filled with butterflies."

Bwahahahaha, yeah, no shit. What's bizarro is that Chad Kroeger actually did write the damn thing.

I still don't really get what the big deal was. I mean, I'm glad they had to redo it because I don't think I'd like the song nearly as much, but Chad's version is on the Santana CD, so... wtf.

[identity profile] obtabius.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well in Australia, we only got the Chad Kroeger version, it wasn't until this summer that I even heard the other version. So I have to say that I like the Kroeger version. THe other one just sounds weird to me.

Not gravelly enough :)

I must agree that the book description sounds very fanfic-ish. You would have fooled me if you had told me that you downloaded it from ff.net :P

I've read two books by Mr. Sparks: A Walk to Remember, which I liked very, very much, so much that I read another one of his works, A Bend in the Road, which sucked so, so hard that I've never given him another chance. I think I'll wait until the movie to see if "The Notebook" is worth reading...

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read A Walk to Remember, but I did see the movie and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. (I also started liking Mandy Moore because of it.) I wasn't very impressed w/ The Notebook, writing wise, so I wasn't going to try anything else of his (especially because I've also heard scathing things about Message in a Bottle). I cannot, however, resist the GP fun of The Wedding. What was wrong w/ ABitR? Was it the writing or the story that sucked? Or both? <g>

I'd totally wait to see TN as a movie -- I think it'll be a much better story visually told. Of course, these are only my perceptions from seeing the trailer.

[identity profile] sydney-lynne.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, A Walk to Remember is a good one. I read it before I watched the movie (which I liked a lot--went back and watched the DVD commentaries) and it's pretty different from the movie, but good. The book is more old-fashioned and religious-themed, and Jamie looks very different than brunette Mandy Moore, but it's a quick read and quite touching.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, good to know. I've seen plenty of copies of that book, but I wasn't sure I wanted to read it. Just in case it interfered w/ my enjoyment of the movie, you know.

So I've started reading Mists, and now that I have a slightly better sense of the characters, I seem to recall that you once wrote a dissertation on Uther/Igraine because of their physical likeness to D&G. Or maybe I'm on crack... Anyway, if you did, I want to read it now that I know who you're talking about. <g>

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the writing was average Sparks stuff - it just gets the message across. The problem I had was with the plot...

I found the characters flat and the story very predictable. I know there are only a few endings that work in a romantic novel, but I don't care as long as the path the author takes getting there is interesting and original enough... but I found the story plain vanilla. I couldn't empathize with the main character, and his change of heart came 100 pages too late for me to care - or to believe it, really.

Plus, a lot of the plot hangs in a mystery that is very, very easy to solve. You just have to use what I call the Maximum Angst Rule to discover who is the murderer/thief/sperm donor: discard from the list of suspects anyone who is too obvious (the ones the narrator wants you to think are suspects), those who couldn't have done the deed (because they were children, they were dead or is the hero's love interest) and those whose culpability would be anticlimatic; from the few who remain you just have to pick up the one who would cause the maximum amount of angst to the hero. I knew who the culprit was in the first third of the book - and with the mystery gone, what was left wasn't just interesting enough.

In contrast, A Walk to Remember had very charming characters, interesting situations and it was a short tale that leaves you wanting for more. I find it hard to believe the same writer penned both books...

My failing health.

Drama girl.

Oh, but if you do die, I'm so killing you. (Oh it'll work; don't look at me that way.)

How sad that I, who eat nothing but cholesterol-inducing foods, have perfectly normal cholesterol and blood pressure, and you, who actually like everything and so could eat healthy and not even notice it 'cause you'd still be HAPPY, somehow have even remotely high cholesterol. I do believe that at only 144, yes, diet should totally do it rather than las drogas. And I *like* las drogas.

[identity profile] leiliaxf.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)

I'm shocked and stunned that Jade hasn't read these! OMGWTFBBQ!!!!! They're so....so....

OMG. Just read them already!

[identity profile] acciopotter.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean your "bad" cholesterol is at 144? Because cholesterol is considered high when your total reaches 200 and above. For example, I have high cholesterol, my total's up to 250. EEP! And I'm 23, so every doctor I've asked, including my father, has told me I'm too young to take any cholesterol-lowering drugs. I gave up my Starbucks white chocolate mochas for this!! Grr.

Yeah, I think it's the bad cholestrol that's at 144. Blargh.

I'm 26, so I guess that makes me an old enough lady to take them. :p But I want to try eating healthier first, before I turn to pharmaceuticals. <g>

*bonds with fellow high cholesteroler*

[identity profile] acciopotter.livejournal.com 2004-05-10 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Eating healthier is so much easier said than done! And don't forget the exercise...it's all about the cardio. It'd be nice not to be in our 20s worrying about this, huh?

[identity profile] corianderstem.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ack at the high cholesterol! Does that mean no more Olive Garden? *g*

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing means no more Olive Garden. :D

What it really means is that I need to retire the little deep fryer I just got, and also be more careful about how indulgent I let myself be wrt my daily eating habits.

now that is true love...

Flowers in the Attic ~ My first love in literature.*sigh* Will have to recapture that feeling as well. My daughter is 13 and will probably be getting to those soon.
I too must agree with you that Nickelback's version is dark and angsty, much like just about everything they do. BUT I like their version. Sometimes I need angst, and they fit the bill.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, these were so the books we read in junior high that everyone devoured because they were so "taboo."

And don't get me wrong; I like Nickelback, and I definitely need my angst and my hard rock -- one of my favorite bands of all time is Linkin Park. But, imho, for this particular song, it just wasn't the right sound. I mean ... "Bouncin' round from cloud to cloud/Like walking 'round with little wings on my shoes" just does not call for dark and angsty to me. Fully my own opinion, of course. :D

[identity profile] absolut-jmo.livejournal.com 2004-05-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
*snort* Yes, the lyrics call for something different than Nickelback.
They could make "Zipp-a-dee-doo-da" sound dark and angsty.

Hm.

First off, sorry about all the 'anonymous' comments I occasionally do. I don't have an LJ, so I guess I'm stuck with this for a while.

I have to side with the people who like the Chad version better. I love Alex's voice in his other songs, but it sorta sounds weird to me in this one. Am I the only one who doesn't think Chad sounds dark and angsty in the song? *lol*

Re: Hm.

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No need to apologize; but you do know that LJ is completely free, right? You can get one at any time.

I have to say that it's quite possible I also love the Alex Band version because I know there's a tall, skinny blond boy behind the voice. :D

Re: Hm.

(Anonymous) 2004-05-07 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I do know LJ is free. But I'm also extremely lazy, so I'd probably update a journal like once every two months.

Well, can I just say I love Alex Band, and for exactly the same reasons as you listed? ;) *sigh*
