random things

1) My grass is so brown it's embarrassing. Normally in any other neighborhood, I could just be like, well I'm just being responsible by not using water. In this new neighborhood, however, we got a notice at the beginning of summer that it was time to water our lawns (which I ignored)! My neighbors' lawns (most of them) are still green. I'm expecting a reprimand from our homeowners association any day now. According to my manager, I don't really need to do anything to make it green again except water it, and maybe spread some grass seed around to reinforce. But part of me thinks it's dead, dead.

2) My paintings from Afremov arrived! I'm fine with both "Dinner" and "City by the Lake," but I'm not happy with "Misty Mood 2." :( The problem is that the original feels very ethereal, cold, and almost eerie. In the re-creation, he uses way too much red and orange, not enough purple and green, and so the feel, the mood, is totally lost. (Plus the finer details are lacking... third lamp not filled in, walkway that seems like a wall of ice rather than leading down into the distance.)

Original

Re-creation

I didn't want to be a jerk, and I totally understand that it's a re-creation and not the original, but it was just too far from the original, at least in the "feel" of the piece. The one [personal profile] adelagia got, "Farewell to Anger," seemed just as good if not better than the original, at least in its feel. But the "misty mood"-ness re-creation just wasn't there. I mean, you can tell when you do a direct comparison like above, how many details, the subtleties, are missing in the re-creation.

Anyway, I contacted them and they were very nice about it. First, they explained that it wasn't going to look like the original exactly (which I already knew). Second, they offered me a short list of choices, including returning the piece for a refund. The two options that were the most tempting to me were:

1) Leonid would paint it again, and they would send me pictures during the process to make sure I was happy with it. I would then return the piece I received, once I got the new artwork.

2) I could keep the one I had, and also choose another painting from the "Daily Deals" section of the site, free of charge.

At first I went with #1, but after thinking about it, decided to do #2 instead. Why? I didn't want to drag out the process. Having them send me pictures and then me having to supervise the process (and be a pain in the ass) just didn't sound appealing. I really, really like the original Misty Mood 2, but there was no guarantee that after a lot of delay and potential annoyance, I would actually like the end result as much as I like the original.

So I've decided to just keep the one I have, and selected a different painting, "Spirits by the Lake," instead to "make up" for my dissatisfaction with "Misty Mood 2." I don't even like it THAT much; my next favorite is probably the one [personal profile] adelagia has, but I don't want to dupe hers, and in any case knowing my luck it wouldn't be as awesome anyway. /Eeyore I'm going to wait to receive it before I put up any of the paintings (with the exception of the one that's going above the dining table), in case I change my mind about where I want them to go.

I'm just sad and disappointed because "Misty Mood 2" was my favorite and the one I was most looking forward to. :(

3) I've gotten interested in nail stamping. I bought a bunch of templates and stampers and polishes to give it a try. :D
