Ready, set, disaster!
Thanks to everyone who made useful (note this adjective,
akscully) suggestions as to what should go into my emergency survival kit. I think I want to be prepared to the level of an unforeseen disaster that's quite serious. I probably (hopefully) won't ever need to use it, but it should cover the "light" disasters such as a power outage to something more severe.
I've decided I want to have two "kits" -- one for the house and one for the car, where it's kept in the trunk at all times, in case something happens while I'm out, or if I just need to GO. I figure if I'm at home my car should be with me, so in these lists I won't duplicate items -- the house kit can be assumed to have all things the car kit has (but not vice versa).
This is kind of a shopping/packing list for myself, but if you have any ideas/suggestions, let me know! What would you put in your kit??
I'm aiming to get things that are least dependent on other things as much as possible -- for example, instead of "lighter" I'd prefer a firestarter that doesn't require gas.
For the car:
- One of those huge backpacks hikers use to store all this stuff
- 4 bottles of water
- water canteen
- water purification tablets (OK, I don't know if this actually exists... Katniss uses them in Hunger Games to make drinkable water -- yay, they do exist! But really for emergency use only... if possible water should be boiled or allowed to sit out in the sun on a cloudless day for 6 hours)
- 3 blankets (2 traditional and also mylar thermal blankets)
- ultra-compactable sleeping bag (like this) and/or a couple of emergency sleeping bags
- firestarter (doesn't require gas or matches -- ooh, this! Tip: store some dryer lint to use as lightweight, easily ignited tinder)
- clean change of clothes (2 sets)
- knit hat/gloves
- 8 cans of cat food (for my furry buddies)
- dry dog/cat food (3 cups each)
- pet leashes (2)
- 7 cans of human food (which would be best for nutrition purposes?)... possibles: peanut butter, nuts, tuna, mac & cheese, rice & beans (Zatarain's), peaches, green beans, ramen, lentil soup, black beans
- freeze-dried/dehydrated meals (such as this)
- hot plate
- small pot
- utensils: fork, spoon, chopsticks
- cell phone + car charger
- solar charger for cell phone (if such a thing actually exists)
- bar of soap
- hand sanitizer
- toothbrush/toothpaste (can't neglect dental hygiene)
- handcrank flashlight (doesn't require batteries)
- Swiss army knife (with flat/Phillips screwdrivers and can opener)
- multi-purpose knife
- small stainless steel kettle (like this or this)
- jumper cables
- paper/pen
- maps
- first aid kit
- thick socks
- comfortable, thick hiking boots
- prescription glasses/sunglasses
- handcrank radio (to find the military signal that tells me where the last bastion of humankind is)
- compass
- cash
For the house:
- gas camping stove (like this -- my mom uses this when we have hotpot at home!) + extra fuel (butane)
- 7 gallons of water
- kerosene heater (like this + extra kerosene - can't buy online)
- traditional flashlight + extra batteries
- stormproof matches + case
- candles (or this emergency candle that provides light for 100 hours)
- lighter
