Alias and my new computer.

Well, I didn't hate it. These days, that's high praise indeed. <g>

It wasn't the Alias of old, but at least no one bothered me. I liked seeing the whole team at the beginning of the episode, and how they all worked in conjunction for most of it. Vaughn was about as useful as he can be, so that's all I can ask on that front.

Did I call Weiss needing to find out soon or what? I don't even know why they waited, but his reaction when he saw Vaughn was lovely. And I'm rather digging whatever they're trying to do with him and Nadia ... part of me hopes that she'll turn out to be evil, but Weiss will be her little softie marshmallow and her only weakness. That would be nice. :D

Speaking of Nadia, I think I liked her more in this episode than I've liked her on any previous occasion. I especially dug the psychological examination with Jack; although the results of that was probably the part I liked least of the episode.

Sydney was going to tell Nadia that Jack is responsible for Irina's (supposed) death, because as she CORRECTLY notes, it will be worse coming from someone else (and especially if Nadia also learns that Syd knew the whole time). So how does what Jack did solve the issue, exactly? He didn't. If anything, he's made things worse, because now they are not only guilty of lying by omission, but of lying, period. Nadia could STILL find out the truth somehow, given the world they live in and the enemies they have (who are all incredibly mouthy; just look at Lauren, revealing secrets to Sydney even with her dying breath). I know the hope Jack has is that by achieving some semblance of closure, Nadia will not look for her mother's killer; I think it's a really naive hope for someone like Jack, and doesn't make much sense. Whether or not Nadia looks for Irina's assassin, she is still capable of finding out the information from another source.

Not sure what the point of Syd sporting bruises was. Why should that have caught The Guy's (can't remember his name) attention? IMHO they had already done enough with the car-fire stunt and Syd's skimpy clothes; to add an additional layer to that was unnecessary (especially since they didn't go anywhere with it) and risky. Someone like The Guy is incredibly cautious, as they tried to stress, so all the coincidences would have only made him more suspicious, if you ask me.

I liked Marshall telling Vaughn off (and I even liked Vaughn's response), heehee. I know only too well what that feels like – "I know what I'm doing, and your stressing me out isn't going to make it go any faster!"

Still no Sark, which is disappointing. I'm looking forward to seeing him again, and to see how Drew Goddard and Jeff Bell will fare in a non-Buffy world.

Well, I have picked out the parts for my new computer. It's tres exciting. I've ordered most everything except for my mainboard and the graphics card; will likely do that later tonight. The specs and my notes about each:
  • AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2GHz) processor [Going any higher would have caused a substantial increase in cost, since I'd also have to get a different mainboard to support a faster processor.]

  • 160GB hard drive [Heehee, quite a difference from my current 19GB.]

  • 1GB RAM [Photoshop won't dare close on me anymore.]

  • A Radeon 9800 Pro AGP video card [Or at least, that's the plan. This has been a total pain to find at a reasonable price. Depending on what happens, I may or may not get the Pro version.]

  • A dual-format DVD burner, max DVD write speed of 16x, max CD write speed of 48x [I think that's fastest available wrt DVD writing, and I wanted a dual-format one so I don't have to worry about which blank DVDs I purchase.]

  • DVD-ROM [Just in case I'd like to play DVDs or CDs while I'm burning.]

  • Floppy drive [Because it would be lame to have a computer without one, even though I rarely use it.]

  • A cool new tower/case [Has transparent side panels and a light fan! See a pic of it here.]
The mainboard I'm looking to get has a sound card built in as well as Ethernet, so I don't need to get those ... the only other thing is a monitor. I'd like to get a new one because my old one really sucks, but I haven't decided yet whether to get a CRT or go the whole hog and get an LCD flat panel. My brother says that it's probably best to go to a physical store to get a monitor, so I'll be doing some looking around this weekend.

I'll have the opportunity to look at a Best Buy 35 min. from me, because it was the ONLY place that isn't completely sold out of World of Warcraft (Jade and I actually saw one at a Target in LA, but it was kind of beat up and we stupidly put it back), which is one of the games I want to play on my new machine, as well as Sims 2. <g>

So anyway, because I don't abuse the polls feature enough, here's one! I've laid out all the specs on my new system above, and it cost a pretty penny. How much, exactly? (Counting the asterisked items, the mainboard, and the video card, but NOT the monitor.)

I wanted to say "a shiny new quarter" but didn't.

[identity profile] heinous_bitca.livejournal.com 2005-01-14 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Any chance you can tell me/email me where you got all the bits? I need a new computer, and if I can follow your advice, I think I'd save myself some cash! :)

Or have your brother email me. :D

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2005-01-14 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You definitely would, and if you're unafraid of computer guts, it's fairly 'easy' to put together. :D

I can tell you where I got all my parts, but depending on your own preferences they may/may not be right for you. The way I found the parts I wanted at decent prices was by going to http://www.pricewatch.com/, which has dozens of listings of computer parts from various sellers. (Try and avoid purchasing from anyone with feedback ratings under 80%.) That might be your best bet to get the computer you want.

Here's what I got:

Mainboard: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=110096

Processor: http://www.partspc.com/store/product2985.html

Hard Drive: http://www.ikor-design.com/ikor-design/product_info.php?products_id=4307

RAM: http://ms4me.com/covase51pc41.html

DVD-ROM: http://www.ikor-design.com/ikor-design/product_info.php?products_id=3625

Floppy Drive: http://www.runtimecc.com/store.rcc?view_category=49&SessionID=2498376

Tower: http://www.pcimicro.com/.sc/ms/dd/1067371375383184/9/nc/Case--Powmax%5E2FHarma/2834/Powmax%2520Angle%2520Silver%2520ATX%2520400W%5E2FLed%2520Fan%2520Case

Video card: http://www.gogocity.com/product_details.asp?dept%5Fid=331&pf%5Fid=CO02VDO0292

I may also get an extra cooler; if I did, it'd be this one: http://www.censuspc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=SPA04B4&Category_Code=

Also, someone just said that they had the tower I got and it didn't hold in the sound well (it was noisy), so that's another consideration.

Naturally, you can get whatever drives you want/need. You can get faster CD writers and readers, but I decided to just go with DVD equivalents even if I'm sacrificing some speed.

A million jillion dollars.

Your computer specs turn me on.

If you sign up for WoW, tell me. It's one of the few MMORPGs that I'm really interested in. The other is Guild Wars which claims that it will never have a subscription fee which would be quite neat.

If you start playing WoW, I play an Alliance hunter on Whisperwind and a Horde Shaman on Argent Dawn.

OMG awesome. What's your current level? A few of us have been talking about forming a guild, with a giant red pen as our mascot. Heehee.

My Hunter is 26 (just dinged last night!) and my Shaman is 23, but I have a few other chars scattered across the below-10 range. Both servers I play on are high traffic, though, so if you want to start on a less busy server, I'd be willing to join you guys. :) I play right now with a group of friends I've been gaming with since 1999...we all used to play EQ together back in the day, and everyone migrated to those two servers when WoW started up. (Some others ended up on different servers, and I really have to track them down and find out how they're doing. But that's neither here nor there.)

I'd be all for a Beta guild! Fear the red pens of doom! :D

The Job Hunt Has Begun...

There are few things hotter than a girl talking about computer specs :p

It's so good to hear from you!! How did your move go? Good luck with the job hunt; I wish you all the best. *hugs*

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2005-01-19 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooops, wrong subject in that last post. My mom's computer was acting all wonky, overwriting most fields in LJ's reply forms. The "Autocomplete" option in browsers can be dangerous.

Anyway, the move went out without a hitch. I'm still feeling somewhat disconnected (I was living seven years and a half in another city, so I was expecting that) and the job hunt has been somewhat unsuccessful so far, but I'm still in good spirits. I'd be better if my only connection to the online world wasn't an old Win98 machine with a 28.8 modem. I think I have to invest into a computer myself...

I have that tower (in black though, not grey/silver)! Or at least, I used to. The flashy lights that kept going up and down the side really annoyed me so I just unplugged them. Then I got a better one that was less noisy (it keeps the sound in better)

And I just got a 160 gig hard drive too :) its a huge improvement from the 10GB i was using ;)

i'm glad weiss is in on it all now. he's joining the black ops thing right?

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2005-01-14 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, I wish I'd known about the sound thing before buying it, but oh well! It's still pretty, and since the machine sits under/to the side of my desk I should be okay wrt the lights (I hope). Woohoo for 160G hard drives! I'm wondering now if I should have been even more ambitious and gotten a bigger one. <g>

I assume Weiss is going to be part of the black ops crew, since a) he knows about them now; b) he was seen at the end of the episode at APO; and c) it'd be the easiest way to keep Weiss involved, which you have to believe he would be, being in the opening credits and all. :p

re: the magically disappearing Sark

[identity profile] sororitysheep.livejournal.com 2005-01-16 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The no Sark aspect of this season so far is making me cry. *sniffle* I mean, come on! He's the best villain the series has ever come up with-- British, cute as hell, completely amoral, and a total coward who keeps getting his ass kicked by all and sundry but retains his insouciance despite it all.

Long live the Sark love. Of course the only reason he doesn't get any airtime at all is because they're afraid of the chemistry he'll undoubtedly create with Sydney. Hmph. Too bad they can't put Vaughn in a coma while Sydney finds herself forced to work with Sark to find his attacker.

Now that would be Alias.
