ASOIAF #4: Tyrion is actually a secret Targaryen.
This is a really popular fan theory and I'm not exactly sure why, other than that people love Tyrion and they have a fascination with the Targs.
So let's get into it.
Tyrion is actually a secret Targaryen.
I am not a fan of this theory and hope it’s not true. It’s born from the fact that people seem to believe (with weak/little evidence) that Tyrion is going to be one of the three heads of the dragon that is part of The Prince That Was Promised prophecy. Why, I'm not exactly sure, other than, again, that people like Tyrion and want to see him riding a dragon. I believe this theory took root before the publication of ADWD, before any of us knew that "Aegon" was "still alive," so now people are finding it difficult to let go of a favorite theory.
(As an aside: I'm not even convinced that "the dragon has three heads" means three different people. After all, the prophecy is about a single dragon that has three heads. And even if it did mean three different people, it doesn't make sense for it to be Tyrion. At this point it's more likely to be Jon, Dany and f/Aegon. But -- the prophecy is a different post, so I'll just leave it at that for now.)
Unfortunately, this theory got some support in ADWD, when we learn for the first time that Aerys was apparently into Joanna Lannister, Tywin’s wife. The theory goes that Aerys either raped Joanna or they had a consensual union, and Tyrion is the result of that.
I hate this theory for several reasons. 1) Not everyone is a secret Targaryen. Jon is already almost certainly a secret Targaryen. Then there’s f/Aegon, who was revealed in ADWD to still be alive. So he makes another secret Targaryen. (Though his being who he says he is, is hotly contested, hence the f/ before his name.) If Tyrion is yet another one, it just cheapens the other reveals and makes it all rather silly. (There are even theories that Cersei or Jaime or both are also Targaryens!) 2) I don’t need Tywin to have an understandable reason why he treats Tyrion so abominably. Why can’t it just be that he’s a total dick and looks down on Tyrion for being a dwarf? And because Tywin’s beloved wife died giving birth to him? Besides, I would think that if he even suspected that Tyrion wasn’t his, he’d have left him out to die. Instead, Tywin has repeatedly stated that what little respect he affords Tyrion is because Tyrion is a Lannister. 3) I like that Tyrion is a gray area, that he can be both a despised and loyal Lannister, but also a decent, likable person. It’s not black and white like the Slytherin families in Harry Potter!
So please, GRRM. Let these "clues" that Tyrion may be a secret Targ be red herrings that you like to tease people with and nothing more.
