You and I remember Budapest very differently.
I am fangirling The Avengers so hard right now. I require all the Hawkeye/Romanoff fanfic you have. I know what you read was, "I would like some Hawkeye/Romanoff fanfic," but what I said was, "GIVE ME ALL THE HAWKEYE/ROMANOFF FIC YOU HAVE." (Bonus points if you can name what I'm referencing there...
adelagia is disqualified since we just giggled about this not two days ago.) I thankfully have
laria_gwyn on my flist because she has recced this story, which is several shades of fabulous.
I need to watch it again SOON. Maybe this weekend. It's one of those movies that won't be nearly as amazing watching on TV, so I have to enjoy it in the theater multiple times. I hope it's still playing while
jade_okelani is here, because THAT IS HAPPENING.
Right after the movie ended and the credits were rolling, K. turned to me and said, "OK, WHO is this Jeremy Renner?!" :))))))))) HE IS MAGIC. HE IS EVERYTHING.
- Even I did not realize just how much I loved Jeremy Renner until he was on the same screen as Chris Hemsworth, and I could not take my eyes off JR. I mean, Chris is an almost perfect male specimen and I adore him also, but apparently less than I adore Jeremy. <3 And granted, their characters might've made a difference. I liked Hawkeye and Romanoff because they're both just plain human. Human with some extraordinary abilities, sure, but not supernatural or insane tech, so maybe I just identified with them more on that level.
- I looooooooooooved just about every bit of the movie. It wasn't perfect by any means -- I mean, it still suffers from being a comic book action movie, so the plot is pretty thin and there are a lot of things that you have to suspend your disbelief for, but it was so very entertaining.
- One thing I found very difficult to look past, though, was NOT: 1) Gods from another world/aliens speaking English, when we on this planet don't even all speak English; 2) Thor not being able to just take care of everything himself, being a god and all; 3) Thor being able to be harmed at all by humans like Captain America and the Hulk; 4) Captain America's shield being able to withstand all that supernatural -- and natural -- power, though granted I don't remember what the deal is with it; 5) Tony Stark being able to survive what Iron Man gets put through, regardless of the suit; his own body is being banged around in it, his head hits things, etc.; 6) Barely anyone getting hurt at all, especially the normal humans. None of that fazed me much. It was freaking the Hulk being totally uncontrollable when he was attacking Romanoff, where they made clear that he wasn't capable of being reasoned with... to suddenly at the end totally being able to be reasoned with and one of the gang!! WHAT?? That made no sense at all. Super lazy of them not to even address it.
- That said, I love Mark Ruffalo, and I loved the way he played Bruce Banner. When Tony's trying to get a rise out of him is one of the more enjoyable scenes of the movie, and there were plenty of those. (Like Tony calling Barton "Legolas." Or Tony saying that Coulson's first name is "Agent." :))))))) )
- It's always nice to see Thor, but it's also weird to see a god mixing with humans because it's not really clear where his powers end, how far they go, whether he can be harmed... and he seems to have limits but it's not consistent, as sometimes he can get the shit beat out of him and look none the worse for wear, then other times he'll get a nosebleed from something way less traumatic and oh I don't want to think about this anymore. Instead, I'll talk a little bit about Jane. I'm glad they mentioned her and thought to put Thor's potential unease at rest wrt her safety... but at the same time, I was like, wait, so Thor can come to Earth whenever he wants? So why hasn't he come back for her??? I thought, at the end of Thor, that that gateway was closed, and she was searching for a way to him while he would find another way back to her, eventually. But it turns out that that wasn't the only gateway? He can come and go as he pleases? So what the hell, then? I never got the sense that he was staying away from her for her own good or anything like that...
- Also re: Thor, how many bloody chances is he going to give Loki before he accepts that his brother -- sorry, his "adopted" brother :))))))))) -- is just plain evil? I mean, sure, it speaks well of Thor that after everything, he still loves Loki enough to want him to be 'good,' that he still considers him his brother... but come on.
- And of course, Tony Stark is great as usual. Robert Downey Jr. always brings it with his spectacular brand of funny. Seriously, how does he DO IT? I was also impressed with how they handled his and Pepper's relationship. Maybe because it didn't have a whole lot of screentime, they didn't have much of a chance to ruin it, but what we got was great. Sweet without being schmoopy, with them both still themselves.
- Robin Scherbatsky!!!!!!! Nick Fury's right-hand woman!!!! I was thrilled to see her. :D I wonder if she can thank NPH for introducing her to Joss.
- I was least impressed/interested in Captain America. :/ He just doesn't do it for me. He's too earnest and, well, boring. I enjoyed the CA movie a lot the first time I saw it, but I tried to rewatch it the other day and just couldn't get into it. In The Avengers I thought he stood out as being pretty much the most useless one of the group, though they tried to make him the dude with heart and leadership. I didn't really buy it. If there's a natural leader of the group it's Thor.
- I have saved my favorites for last, I admit. I knew I'd like JR, because I enjoy JR. I wasn't sure about Scarlett Johansson. I used to really like her, but that tapered off to ambivalence, and I remember kind of eye rolling about her supposed abilities in Iron Man 2. I wasn't impressed with her over-the-top-look-at-what-a-badass I am opening scene in this movie, but then after that reallllllly enjoyed her. And of course, I was intrigued by the implied UST between her and Hawkeye, even though it was never explicitly stated to exist (which is what makes it good, I know).
At first I was kind of bummed that Hawkeye got changed to the other side right away. I was like, oh noooooo, he's going to be a BORING BAD GUY? What a waste! But that actually served two worthy purposes: 1) He got to show how capable he was (and thus illustrate for the audience what a loss he was for the Avengers side and coup for Loki) without delving into the bickering power matches that the others went through (which got a bit ridiculous), and 2) It was a source of great angst for Romanoff, and compounded on the audience's desire to see him change back. All of which, of course, culminated in that totally hot scene of the two of them fighting each other. The whole movie could have been that and I would have enjoyed it immensely. :)) As it was I thought it was far too short!
- Though of course, now I'm like, where's our Hawkeye/Black Widow movie, damn it??? They are WAY more interesting than freaking Captain America. At least we'll get to see JR in a new Bourne movie soon. Now I'm looking more forward to that than ever before.

Mmmm. Delicious.
- I was sad Coulson was killed off. :-( I should have seen it coming, it is Joss after all, and I should probably be thankful it wasn't Hawkeye and/or Romanoff, but still. Coulson was such a likable guy, and tied them all together... which I suppose was the point. Sigh. RIP, Phil.
I'm sure there are a billion other things I want to say, but it's 1am, I had a very greasy late-night dinner, and I really just want to fall into bed.
