woot woot, I would definitely recommend the Atkinson books then. He does a great job of integrating all of the facets of the campaigns, from the commanders' personalities to the minutiae of feeding the troops without getting bogged down in details or making it all about the larger than life people running the armies.

I think there are five books in the Thursday Next series and he also has a Nursery Crimes series (starring Jack Spratt, remarried after his first wife's untimely death) which is also delightful. I love them all!
