I haven't read the HG Wells book either; this WoTW was based (somewhat) on the version made in the 1950s (the alien hand coming out of the spaceship? Homage/stolen from that flick).

I think this was probably the best Spielberg movie I've seen in awhile. It certainly was chilling and intense. *shrug* I'm his bitch, what can I say.
