my new suitcase!!!

I'm here to talk luggage. I bought a new suitcase, and I looooooooove iiiiiiit.

It's an Away, and I learned about it through my coworkers, because it's making the rounds. The most popular one seems to be "The Carry On," which is the smallest one they make. Its dimensions make it allowable on all major airlines (domestic and international) as a carry on. It's super well designed, so it's compact but roomy. It's also got a TSA-approved lock, which means you can lock your suitcase, but it can be opened if necessary by those special keys TSA has, so they don't break your lock. It also has a PHONE CHARGER. That's right, as you're waiting for your flight, you can freaking charge your phone with your suitcase. How awesome is that? I mean, yes, I realize that many major airports have some kind of charging station at the gate these days -- but still, not having to be reliant on those, and not having to jostle with others for a free spot, is pretty awesome. (I assume you can charge pretty much any device if it has a USB hookup.) And it's a pretty big powerbank -- 10000mAh, which is good for charging an iPhone up to five times.

My coworker K. was able to pack her entire 6-day trip to D.C. and fit it into her Carry On, and she also brought SEVEN PAIRS OF SHOES. :O Like, forget for a moment that it's totally crazy to bring seven pairs of shoes on any trip, much less one that lasts for less than a week -- the fact she was able to do that is awesome. To be totally fair, it's not just the suitcase, but also the fact that she -- and everyone else I know these days -- uses packing cubes, but still.

I got "The Bigger Carry On," which is good for all major US airlines and some international. May not fit as a carry on in smaller planes. But it's otherwise got the same benefits as The Carry On. (They also sell checked luggage that doesn't come with a power bank.)

Also, I bought the limited edition Minions one. :D It even comes with a Minions design sleeper bag!

Here's the charger, located at the top near the handle. There are two USB ports, one that's high-speed and the other that's regular-speed.

20170716_052617245_iOS

I cannot wait to travel with it for the first time. Everyone else has loved theirs to pieces, so I'm guessing I will too. :D If this got you excited about a suitcase, here's a link for $20 off (yes, if you buy a suitcase, I get a $20 credit, yadda yadda).

All of my July boxes just arrived, so it's time to take a look at June's! Because I'm perpetually behind!

He looked like Il-hoon in my peripheral vision, okay!

Wow that it's been a month+ since I last updated. ><

It's particularly a shame, because I have been saving talking about my latest K-celeb obsession because I felt he deserved his own post, and now I've gone so far down Obsession Road that having to walk back to square one seems like a daunting task.

...and one I won't be trying to tackle tonight, either. :))

Instead I'm just here to point you all to [personal profile] adelagia's post about our weekend trip to Vancouver, in which we basically had as many meals as we did escape rooms, lol. We unfortunately wasted a meal on the very disappointing Night Market, but at least now we know what we're missing (long lines and crowds), which is to say that we're not missing anything at all.

My post about Sung-jae will come in time. Good things come to those who wait (and wait)!

from Hannover to New York

Well, now I'm in New York! Arrived on Friday, so I've somehow already been here a few days. O.o Time flies. I don't know if it's the time zone changes or what, but I have been having a really terrible time with my math while here. More on that in a bit. My body clock is also all screwed up. Going from Seattle to Hannover then to New York, I have no idea what time it's supposed to be! Every time I look at a clock I'm mystified that that's the time.

More details on my trips... )

I can't remember if I mentioned this in my other post, but on my flight over, I watched a Japanese anime film called "your name" and it was WONDERFUL. I made Jade watch it too, and she also thought it was a beautiful movie. Totally rec it. It had everything you want a good movie to have.

I'm so bummed to be missing two Korean classes, especially during some very difficult lessons. We're on compound vowels now, and I find it so confusing. :/

Guten tag!

I am now in Germany! Well, I've been here for a few days, and am leaving in another couple, but I have a lull in the work I'm doing right now so might as well take the time to update LJ, lol. It's kind of crazy, though, the workspace here is TERRIBLE. There are hardly any power outlets for dozens of people, so people just camp out at an outlet or queue up to use one, it's insane. If I have to come back next year, I'm going to have to remember to bring a power strip.

I'm pleased to say that my experience with this trip has been a lot better than it was last year. Last year, I basically only knew one person, O., who was great to work with work-wise, but on a social level she wasn't really that person. This year, I'm not only traveling with one of my writers, which is great, but my business owner this year is J., who isn't as good on the work side, but is great for the social side of things. Last year, O. and I had one dinner together; this year, J. has arranged at least two team dinners so far which have been fun! More details on the trip. )

I have one and a half more days here -- I fly to New York on Friday -- and V. and I are hoping to get in at least two massages (one today, one tomorrow) before we go, because J. found a Thai massage place that costs only 30 Euros an hour.

finished 3 k-dramas

[personal profile] adelagia and I have started our Korean class, and I am LOVING it so far! It's so fun to learn! And I love being able to put a lot of it to practice by watching K-dramas and looking up the names of my favorite actors (after guessing at how they spell their name). ;)

I'm actually really surprised by the written language. I had always imagined it was like Chinese, because they use characters, so it was just a matter of memorizing a bunch of different characters. But in fact, it's a lot more like English, wherein they have vowels and consonants, and you use them to create words, just like English! But instead of words going left to right, the words are placed so that they look more like characters (like Chinese). Anyway, the whole thing is really fun and awesome.

I'm just bummed that due to work travel, I'm going to miss two weeks in a row. Argh! I'll be so behind. :( I hope I can keep up; I've felt really good about things so far and it would really be tragic if this ends up derailing the whole thing.

******

For my last few K-dramas, I seemed to be in a cycle where I was either watching a show where I liked the story, or a show where I liked the ship, but not both. >< This is unlike, say, Answer Me 1997, High School King of Savvy, and Oh My Ghostess, where I liked both of those things at once. (SIG was in all these shows in some capacity... coincidence?? ;) )

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

In the category of a show where I liked the ship -- "like" is an understatement -- is Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. There was a period of time when I was super done with everything about it other than the stuff with the main pairing, but the other stuff was SO terrible that it was a really frustrating viewing experience. Buuuuuut they did right by us, mostly, in the final two episodes, so my overall lasting impression of the show is positive. I do plan, however, to create a supercut of the show that removes almost everything about the gangsters, and possibly some of the kidnapping plot as well, because both of those things were so poorly done.

As a whole, SWDBS was not a good show. Its massive success is wholly based on the chemistry between, and the individual charms of, its two leads. It also, occasionally, had beautiful cinematography. But that's pretty much it. The writing, story development, plot, pacing, and secondary characters all left so much to be desired. But the leads were so good, and their chemistry so wonderful, that I would still recommend the show to anyone (though I'd caveat it). That's pretty powerful!

Spoilers through finale. )

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

The opposite of SWDBS is Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, which was written by the same writer who co-wrote High School King of Savvy and Oh My Ghostess, both of which were really good in all ways. WFKBJ was a good show, with great writing, pacing, plot development, secondary characters, etc. The leads weren't, in my opinion, as strong as SWDBS (I know Tumblr would shout me down on this one; the couple seems universally beloved). They were good, but I never shipped them the way I ship Bo-young and Hyungsik Bong-soon and Min-hyuk.

I never really got into the lead actress/heroine (way too much crying and wailing for my taste, and I do not understand their coloring choices for her at all), and while I did like the lead actor/hero, I wasn't quite as into him once he was completely defanged (just like Spike!). People seem to love that both Ahn Min-hyuk and Jung Joon-hyung are both nice guy heroes, and while I definitely like that too, what made them interesting was that they both also had a bit of an asshole sheen. I particularly liked Joon-hyung for not getting sucked back into his ex-girlfriend's BS.

Answer Me 1994

This is another one where I liked the story a lot more than I liked any of the ships. It was actually a near-miracle that I ended up finishing this one at all, considering how much I disliked the heroine initially. In the end, I was fine with her, which is a good thing since I have to watch her opposite Park Hyungsik in Hwarang at some point. But the ship was... so meh. It says a lot that [profile] jade_okelani and I thought watching all of 1994 was worth it just for the brief cameos that SIG and Eun-ji did... it speaks to how little we were into 1994, and how much we loved the ship in 1997.

Spoilers! )

I was going to include two other dramas in this post, but if I do that, who knows when I'll actually post this thing? So -- the end! (For now.)

Beauty boxes for March

This is the month where I got a couple of eye shadow palettes, which I actually liked because, while I don't normally wear eyeshadow, I've been experimenting with brown/purple, which Chae-kyung wears once in Goong and looked soooooo good. I bought a couple of shadows from Etude House, but the colors haven't been right and I haven't liked the way they apply.

Enter... Laura Mercier. I think I mentioned before that I was trying out some of their lip glosses, which I generally like. But one of the lip glosses came with a mini LM Caviar Stick, which doubles as a shadow and eyeliner. And guess what? I loved it! It's highly pigmented and glides on sooooo nicely. I ended up buying it in dark brown and purple, and it achieves the look I was going for, wheee! Only caveat is that with the Caviar Sticks you do need a blending brush.

Onto the March 2017 boxes! )

why am I posting this instead of going to lunch?

Korean classes start next week!! Eeee!! The weird thing though was that other than the initial registration confirmation, I'd gotten NO email/notices from them at all. [personal profile] adelagia was like, check the website, duh!!! Which to me is a little nutty. Seriously, you can't email your students some pertinent info like where to go and whether they should buy any textbooks? God, the education system in America... Then [personal profile] adelagia said that since this was community college, she would be happy just to not have Senor Chang as our professor. But you know, NOW I'LL BE DISAPPOINTED!!! That would be so awesome. "Anneyong, CHILDREN!"

Seattle Restaurant Week starts this weekend, and I'm going to try and make it to a few! [personal profile] adelagia and I may do one or two, and I will do a couple with my mom, too -- she looooves RW.

Another ep of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon tonight! Eee!

I'm going to try out some Laura Mercier lip glosses. A coworker of mine uses them and I just LOVE the way they look on her. That said, of course, makeup is super personal and it could look like shit on me. That's why I'm getting a few travel-size ones on eBay, rather than committing to a full tube of one color. My travel-sized Laura Geller gloss (which I still love) is lasting me forever, so really, a small size is really all that's needed. Also, in researching this stuff, it actually reaffirmed my desire to keep going with my Birchbox and Sephora Play subscriptions. High-end makeup/skincare is SO pricey (the cost of a full-size LM gloss is $26), and the sample sizes are really very generous. For the cost of a year's beauty box subscription, I could buy fewer than 5 LM lip glosses! But with the subscriptions I get so much more than just lip gloss, I'm able to use most of what I'm sent, *and* I get the fun element of getting a box of surprises to try out each month. I'm going to cancel the Ipsy subscription, though. I'm generally less impressed with their products/samples, and I definitely don't need three beauty box subscriptions. I should probably also give up either Birchbox or Sephora Play, but I love them both too much right now.

I have gotten sucked back into Groupons because of their irresistible deals to their users who haven't used them in awhile. :)) Luckily, I'm not interested in looking for random deals without those special codes and what not that turns a deal into a steal, so hopefully I won't run into the issue I ran into a number of years back, where I was buying anything that looked remotely interesting, just because it was a good deal!

just goes to show, any show is better when watching with your BFF

All right so, I have to say, I am really enjoying Answer Me 1994 now. Jade and I just finished episode... 8, I want to say? I'm just enjoying the show all up more, meaning I really like all the characters' interactions with one another. It's kind of nice to watch a show where I'm not obsessed with any pairing, which means I can enjoy it on a different level, without the exhausting shipping. :))) SWDBS is taking up all the energy I have on that front. :)) Spoilers. )

I have seen the BEST interview ever between Park Bo-young and Song Joong-ki, from when they made A Werewolf Boy. (Good movie right up until the last 15 minutes, which is maddening.) Even though I kinda sorta ship PBY with Hyungsik because of SWDBS (he is just SO CUTE/FLIRTY with her in all the behind the scenes videos they've released!), seeing that interview really put me on the fence. They are so adorable together, and Joong-ki is one of those guys who has a totally irresistible sense of humor! It comes across in his acting, which I think is why I love him so much. They even got together again last year to do a plug -- of their own accord -- of the latest movie from the director of AWB. Anyway, PYB calls SJK "oppa" in the interview, which made me think about the fact that she seems older than Hyungsik, to the point where I couldn't actually imagine her calling him oppa. So I looked up their ages, and she's almost two years older than him, which I think they're preserving for the show (her being his noona, I mean, not the exact age diff). Anyway, I'm going to try and gif that PBY/SJK interview, but not sure how successful I'll be, because I couldn't find an HD version of it, boohoo.

(no subject)

I am an ice-cream making GENIUS! I have successfully copycatted my favorite ice cream from Salt & Straw!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I am SO excited, because I love that ice cream SO MUCH, and it seems that Salt & Straw is never coming to Seattle.

Okay, well, I can't know if I have copied it EXACTLY RIGHT, but it tastes close enough that I am perfectly content.

I used David Lebovitz's vanilla ice cream base and tinkered with that, and then I made a caramel sauce that seems like a pretty common recipe. I wasn't liberal enough with the caramel in the ice cream itself, so there aren't enough ribbons, but that's easily fixed by drizzling some over the top. Next time, I'll be more generous with ribboning it into the actual ice cream.

Recipe! )

You're not saying you won't eat crappy food in random places, are you?

I am on a kitchen goddess ROLL. I've gotten pretty good at making jajangmyeon, if I say so myself (and I DO, okay). I've made it four or five times now, and I've got it down to a science. So delicious! The only negative is that I can't seem to find the right noodles to use. I'm using fresh Korean noodles, but I've tried various kinds and they're all a little too thick. Besides, jajangmyeon is a Korean take on a Chinese dish, so the noodles should actually be more Chinese-style. There's apparently "jajangmyeon noodles" labeled as such out there, but I've never been able to find them. :( (In related news, [profile] jade_okelani ate jajangmyeon for the first time and now understands what all the hype is about.) The other day I also made chicken tamale pie, and that was reallllllllly good also.

Never let it be said that I neglect dessert! I've also made two kinds of ice cream: vanilla with chocolate stracciatella (basically, chocolate chip ice cream) and chocolate almond walnut. Sooooooooo good. I recently had a disappointing experience with a store-bought ice cream, and decided to make my own. There was one summer when I was making ice cream constantly, but it's been awhile, so I was a little rusty. The custard for the vanilla one seemed a little dicey initially, but after straining it, it turned out great. Next up: I'm going to try and make my favorite sea salt with caramel ribbons ice cream from Salt & Straw. My experimentation so far. )

[profile] jade_okelani and I are sooooooooo **HEARTEYES** over Park Hyungsik it's not even funny. We just LOVE HIM in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and love the show, period. Yes, it has its flaws. But they're easy to overlook when there's so much else we enjoy! I'm both happy and sad that we started watching while it's airing. It's such a great show to look forward to, but it's sooooooooo disappointing when there's no new episode for another week. The problem is, when we decided to watch SWDBS in real time, we had expected to like Goblin a lot more (or I did, at least), and not expected to like SWDBS quite so much. Sigh.

Isn't this an awesome shot of Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-sik? She looks so much better with her normal dark hair like she has it in everything else I've ever seen her in. I'm not sure why Bong-soon has to have the light brown/orange hair, even though PBY is so attractive she can pull it off anyway.

SWDBS spoilers through ep 8. )

The main theme song from SWDBS is sung by Jung Eun-ji! <3!! I love her voice.

I'm giving Reply 1994 another shot. [profile] jade_okelani and I started Reply 1988, but we got to talking, and it seemed to make sense for her to see at least the pilot of Reply 1994. If she could take it, then I could probably get through it with someone else to watch with me, and then we'd be watching things in chronological order. The interesting thing is, on rewatch, I actually do like 1994 better than I did before! Maybe it's watching with Jade, or maybe it's just having the distance from 1997, which I loved sooooooooooooooooo much. I'm not as bothered about the parents being the same actors, and even Go Ara doesn't annoy me as much. I'm still not a fan, but I don't dislike her as much as I did the first time around. This also bodes well for my plan to watch Hwarang (for Park Hyungsik). Spoilery comment. )

One of the shows that's on our watchlist, that must now be bumped up, is She Was Pretty. Why? Because in episode 9, there are cameos from Seo In-guk AND Park Hyungsik!!!!!!!!! If they are on screen at the same time, I might actually not survive.

I was forced to buy a new iPod because my old iPod, the discontinued 120GB one that I got yeeeeeaaars ago, stopped working after the latest iTunes update. It was super annoying, but I've had issues with it over the years, I don't actually need 120GB of space on my portable music player, and I figured this might be Apple's way of stopping support for it once and for all. And by "stopped working" I don't mean that it literally stopped working. I can plug it into my car or any speakers, and it will play fine. However, iTunes and my PC can't read it, so I can't update it. In fact, I thought I might have to wipe the whole thing and re-input all my music, which I've had to do several times before, but I can't even do that. It's basically a time capsule at this point, with only the music I've put into it before March 2017. :P Part of me wondered if I should just be patient, and with the next update of iTunes, it'll fix itself. But like I said, I just figured it was time to get a new iPod, so I did. Only days after I got it, however, I learned from [personal profile] adelagia that she only got her new iPod last year, and the same thing happened to her! So... WTF!

Anyway, what's done is done, and I don't really regret it. I liked that I was able to personalize it with an inscription on the back (I used a song lyric, since it's an iPod!). I like that it uses a touch screen. And I LOVE that I can connect to it via Bluetooth from my car and wireless headphones. So, all in all, despite being resentful of Apple for breaking their own shit so that I can't use it, I'm not sorry I upgraded.

4 shows

I have watched the pilot or more of four shows recently, and I have two I recommend, one I semi-rec, and one I don't rec at all.

Let's start with the bad news, shall we?

Riverdale: I'm sorry, [personal profile] slitherhither, but this show is not good at ALL. The writing is bad, the acting is... not terrible, but not great, certainly not enough to overcome the bad writing, and the overarching mystery feels like such a retread of shows that actually did it well. Basically, this is another CW shallow teen drama. And I'm not necessarily anti-shallow teen dramas as a rule, but you have to give me something to hang my interest onto (like Vampire Diaries). Going in, I didn't even have the reservations that [profile] jade_okelani and [personal profile] adelagia had about the show; they both said the same thing, that they were really into the comics as kids and what they were doing with the show felt "wrong." I read Archie a bit and shipped Archie with Betty, but it wasn't a passionate interest of mine. So I was more than willing to be swept up in whatever guilty pleasure Riverdale had to offer. Sadly, there was no GP to be had at all. Spoilers. )

Goblin: This is my semi-rec. I'm enjoying it, but also... not. I was realllllly excited about this one, because the story sounded good and Gong Yoo was cast as the lead -- I believe it's his first drama since being discharged from the military -- but the reality of it has been somewhat lacking. The theme song is haunting and lovely, the cinematography is gorgeous, the acting is great... basically everything but the story itself. Spoilers )

The OA: I knew almost nothing about this show going in; I had learned about it in an article about the lead actress. I knew it was sci-fi, and that was enough for me to give the pilot a shot. Unlike Goblin and Riverdale, its overarching mystery is pretty intriguing, and they are able to successfully balance the mystery with giving the audience enough bits and pieces to keep us interested. I'm not crazy about the lead actress, but the story and writing are good so far, and the characters aren't two dimensional. It kind of feels like a sci-fi version of The Breakfast Club, lol.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: I rec this one unreservedly, with my whole heart. <3 Park Bo-young is almost impossibly adorable, sweet and likable. Well, to me, anyway. I've liked her in everything I've ever seen her in, starting with You Call It Passion, a movie I saw on one of my flights somewhere. She seems to be transitioning from doing movies to doing dramas, and so far, I'm loving it. Oh My Ghostess was her first drama in awhile, and her transitions from being the mousy restaurant worker to being the bubbly ghost were impressively night and day. I don't think she looks as good with the lighter brown/orange hair she's rocking as Bong-soon, but she's a different character so I'll live. ;)

Park Hyung-sik is a very pleasant surprise as Ahn Min-hyuk. I've never seen him in anything before, and usually when I watch K-drama these days, part of me laments that the hero isn't being played by SIG. ;) In this case, there's no lamenting at all! Jade and I both loooooooooooooove him!

I also love Ji-soo as In Guk-doo. I first saw him in the movie One Way Trip, and I had liked him very much there, too. Jade isn't as crazy about him, but honestly he's helping me like even the secondary pairing. I like the actor, I like the childhood friends thing (hello, Answer Me 1997!), etc. I do prefer her with Min-hyuk, but I can enjoy the Guk-doo ship too, which is a nice change of pace from my usual feelings about K-drama triangles (that the second lead should just GO AWAY).

Spoilers. )

K-drama talk and Talis has an ACL tear :(

IT'S HAPPENING. [personal profile] adelagia and I are taking a Korean I class at BCC in the spring. I'm super excited, but also disappointed because I have to miss at least two classes (that's 20% of the course! :() due to work travel. I really, really, REALLY hope that I don't have to miss more, but who the eff knows. I've told [personal profile] adelagia that she has to take good notes on my behalf so that I won't be forced to take her first-place underwear (Answer Me 1997 reference! WATCH IT!"). :)))))

You know how when you take language classes in high school, the teacher has you pick a common name in that language? In preparation, I have consulted this Korean name generator. My Korean name: Shin Yeon-Ji. (If I input Sarea Okelani, it's Kan Sung-Ra, which sounds like a medieval warrior princess! :D Well, IMHO.)

[profile] jade_okelani and I have finished watching Boys Over Flowers. The most terrible thing has happened... she DIDN'T LIKE YI-JEONG/GA-EUL. /cry I don't even know what to say about it. She and I agree on almost every ship, and I didn't imagine this would be one where we diverged, when it is the ship EVERYONE WHO EVER WATCHES THE SHOW PREFERS. Sigh. She says that she doesn't feel like YJ "wants" GE enough. Whereas the people who ship them obviously feel differently. But you can't "convince" someone about a ship; that's like making someone feel something they don't, which is impossible.

Jade and I are now watching Goblin, which we've both heard good things about. We saw the pilot last night, and I thought it was okay. I love Gong Yoo, though he looks weird... I don't know if it's that he aged, or the military made him skinny, or what, but he doesn't seem as good-looking/charismatic as he was before, lol. But maybe it'll come through more once we get his character to loosen up more; I definitely liked him most in Coffee Prince and One Fine Day when he was smiling and being goofy. The girl seems okay, though she kind of reminds me of the girl from Cinderella and Four Knights, who I was meh about. (But that might've been more the character/story than the girl herself.) What's weird is that there are two guys in Goblin who remind us of SIG, but only in a disappointing way because they're not him. :))))

On my own, I finished watching Mirror of the Witch, which was seminal for my K-drama watching because it's a period drama. It's the first Korean period drama I've ever watched more than the pilot of, and I actually finished it! It starred the girl I liked from High School: Love On, Yoon Shi-yoon from Flower Boy Next Door, the guy who hates Onew in Descendants of the Sun, the second female lead from Answer Me 1997, Kwak Si-yang from Oh My Ghostess, and the guy who plays opposite SIG in The King's Face, another period drama that's on my watch list. WHEW. I'd forgotten how much I liked Yoon Shi-yoon, and this brought it back. :) I liked the show for the most part. Spoilery comments. )

Bad news about Talis... it looks like he has an ACL tear. Ugh. Last week, the day after I took him to the vet to have him checked up because I suspected he needed a dental (he's been yelping randomly and has really bad breath; I know the signs as I've been through it before), my mom took him on a walk to the park. On the way back, she says, he started limping badly and she had to carry him home. She mentioned that he had been obstinate about moving with her to the trash can after he was done with his business (typical for him), so she had to pull/drag him (I've been through it myself), and I suspect that this is when the tear happened. So now I have to take him to a specialist, and either he has to have surgery (he's old, so I'm not thrilled with the idea of putting him through that), or he has to get one of those custom braces made. Ughghghghgh.

so tired. and I have a headache. :/

A disgusting story ahead: My dog is old (he'll be 15 in August) and he has diabetes. I give him insulin shots twice a day, but whereas it used to be well controlled, it seems to be less so now. I'm supposed to do a blood curve for him, and have the kit to do it and everything, but I haven't gotten around to it. The last time the vet did a blood curve, his blood sugar didn't drop down to where it should've been, so she increased his dosage from 4 units to 5. It seems to have helped a bit, but the problem is that he seems to be hungry all the time. When he's not looking for food, he sleeps. This is a dog who, when he was younger, refused to even eat burgers that my dad bought for him from Burger King, or the pork chop rice that my mom gave him. Now he's after anything and everything, including the cat food. Usually my mom takes him out for a walk twice a day. But because it's been snowy and rainy, we've just been letting him go out in the backyard. Yesterday, TWICE, he ate his own poo. Like, it is so disgusting!!!!!! I ran out to stop him the second time, but he had already consumed some. I looked it up online, and "nutrition deficiency" seems to be a commonly listed cause, but there are also reports that there's no proof that this is actually the case. I think he is just hungry. :/ It breaks my heart that he would be that hungry, but there's nothing we can do! He's fed a normal amount of dog food, and in any case we can't overfeed him because his insulin has to be able to control the spike in blood sugar. At this point I just don't know what to do.

I have purchased a domed cast-iron grill pan. My plan is to put it over a portable gas stove, so that I can do Korean BBQ at home. Can't wait to try it out.

For B.'s visit, we're going to go to Snoqualmie Falls first thing in the morning (he's going to be at my house at 7 a.m. -- what is WRONG with people who get up that early on the weekends?!), then will have a late breakfast at Dough Zone, which opens at 9:30. We will then head back to my place and he and his wife will hang out a bit, then they'll probably set off for downtown and walk around Pike Place Market or whatever, and my mom and I will meet them for a late lunch at Etta's before they head off to the airport.

Jade and I finished ep 11 of Answer Me 1997 last night. She's confident about the ending, and it's all my fault. :)) She knows my preferences, and she knows I wouldn't recommend or want to rewatch a story that didn't have a good ending for my ship, so unlike me (and all the people who watched it the first time around), she's not feeling angsty about who Shi-won might choose in the end. Sigh. I feel bad, because the uncertainty is part of the fun! I mean, sure, I was 80 percent sure they would end the way I wanted them to -- all the promotional materials, the duets the lead actors did, etc., all pointed to it -- but it was also fun to have to fear they wouldn't. It made the reveal more satisfying! Le sigh.

Also, she finds the second lead attractive. When watching I found him OK, but after reading all the comments on Viki about his "duck lips," I can't unsee them, and no longer find him very attractive. :))))

GO AWAY WINTER

It snowed here over the weekend, and I worked from home the last two days because I hate driving on icy, snowy roads. It's supposed to rain a lot over the next couple of days, so hopefully that will melt everything away.

A coworker of mine's mother has her cosmetology license, and she offered to put in an order for us if we wanted anything (at wholesale). I ended up buying Kevin Murphy and Davines shampoo and conditioner, along with Davines's Oi All-in-One Milk treatment. I can't believe how much this stuff normally costs! Woohoo for hookups!

I've been watching Shut Up Flower Boy Band. It's been on my DF watchlist for forever, even though nothing about it appealed to me enough to actually get me to start watching. I finally did it after finishing Answer Me 1997, and seeing several comments from people mentioning SUFBB in the same breath.

Wow, lucky I wasn't expecting too much, because it is NOT good. It's not bad -- well, some of it is bad -- but it's nothing I'd ever recommend to anyone. I do like some of the music, and the story as a kind of wish fulfillment is okay, but... yeah.

The lead actor is pretty much the opposite of attractive. The lead actress is pretty but bland (well, her character is, and she doesn't help). The high school drama part of it is super weak, full of the same stuff that I can't stand from other K-drama high school dramas -- a ridiculous amount of bullying, with the student population constantly changing their minds about who's cool and who's not, rumors that get blown completely out of proportion, etc. The supporting characters are also incredibly annoying -- the heroine's best friend, the second male lead's minions, all ugh. The second male lead is played by one of the standout actors from BOF, who played brothers, I believe -- one who was bullied by F4, the other who took revenge for his brother. He is FAR less compelling in SUFBB, and his career seems to have petered out since, so I can't be the only one to feel that way.

I like the boys in the band, especially Kim Min-seok and L, but I've liked them from other things, so I'm predisposed to liking them. Kim Min-seok I first saw in High School: Love On, playing one of the bully's minions, but I ended up loving him, and he also has a small role in Descendants of the Sun. L I know from playing the younger version of So Ji-sub's character in Master's Sun, and thought he was really cute. He's also in Infinite, the boy band that the lead guys from High School: Love On are in, as is Joon-hee from Answer Me 1997.

L (I have no idea how he came to be know as that; his real name is Kim Myung-soo) reminds me of Kim Bum. They actually look alike, with handsome, babyface features and dimples -- L could literally be Bummie's younger brother. Unfortunately they also have the same acting ability, in that it's a little questionable. >< You can see them trying so hard, particularly in scenes where they're trying to be intense. Poor dears. :))

The thing I like most in SUFBB is the secondary pairing (like BOF all over again!), of Hyun-soo (L) with Ye-rim. But they give the secondary pairing hardly any screen time at all -- I would say it takes up about 5% of the overall story, whereas Yi-jeong/Ga-eul was at least 30% in BOF, from what I recall. Maybe it's because of L's lack of acting ability, but I definitely would be more into the overall story if there was more of it. The main pairing started off well, then devolved into something that didn't seem to make a lot of sense or have much feeling behind it.

OK, so I knew Seo In-guk was an excellent actor and singer, who could also play the guitar and piano. But the fact that he can also dance like this is insane. INSANE!

nail polish rec + Answer Me 1994

I just used the Pretty Woman nail polish from January's Ipsy Glam bag, and I was really impressed with it. I'm only OK about the color I got (gray), but I really loved the formula/texture, and seemed to dry quickly (I hate it when I put Seche Vite on and the brush smears the still-wet polish below). The one weird thing about it is that it has a larger-than-normal brush, so that if you have very small nails, it would be quite the chore to not paint outside your nailbed. I don't know if it was the polish or the brush, but I was able to paint ALL the nails on one hand without having to redip the brush, and what went onto my nails was still highly pigmented and even. I don't know that I have EVER been able to do that with a polish. O.o And I'm not sure if it was this particular color or formula, but it seemed to me that I could have just stopped with one coat. I still did two out of habit, but afterward concluded that there wasn't much of a difference and really needed only one. Again, very unusual. All that, plus being 5-free, cruelty free, and vegan? I'm in! Since it's one of this month's Ipsy samples, you can get 30% off an entire order (discount code: IPSY30), so I ordered 8 polishes (and there's free shipping for orders over $15, which is so reasonable). I hope I'll like the others as much as I liked my sample!

Because the gray is kind of boring, I'm thinking of putting some black nail art on them. If they turn out well, I'll share here! If not... I won't. LOL.

Since I enjoyed Answer Me 1997 so much, I've now started Answer Me 1994, and so far I am extremely underwhelmed. Spoilery comments. )

[profile] jade_okelani and I finished Goong yesterday and started Answer Me 1997. :D I had the same reaction to Goong as I did the first time, lol. It gets so terrible and draggy at the end that you forget all the good stuff that came before and just want it to end. Chae-kyung is probably one of my favoritest heroines EVER, but they take so much agency away from her! Spoilery comments. )

Jade is LOVING AM1997 so far. She's so innocent right now, not knowing of the angst and pain to come, that I feel very protective. Haha. But soon, SHE'LL KNOW.

My cousin is coming into town next Friday to interview for a job up here... that would be so awesome if he moved up here! We're going to get together on Saturday, and I'm drawing a blank as to where to take him for meals. O.o I've already taken him to some great places during a previous trip: Staple & Fancy, Lola, Paseo, SeƱor Moose... I don't want to re-do any of those. I also am trying to avoid Asian, because he lives in LA and can get good Asian food any time. What to do, what to do...

Answer Me 1997, fin

All right, so I binge-watched the rest of Answer Me 1997 the previous night, BECAUSE I HAD TO HAVE MY HAPPY ENDING ONCE AND FOR ALL.

Spoilers! )
